The Use of an Applied Behavior Analytic approach in the Education of Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders in a Special Education Primary School

The subject of this dissertation is on the use of an applied behavior analysis (hereinafter referred to as ABA) based approach in the education of pupils diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders in a special education primary school. In the theoretical part, autism spectrum disorder (hereinafter referred to as ASD) is defined within the context of current knowledge, its anchoring in classification systems, symptoms, screening and diagnostic methods, and supported evidence-based practices as it relates to treatments available to individuals with ASD. Furthermore, the theoretical part deals with ABA as a scientific field and its use in the education of pupils with ASD. Last but not least, findings are presented on the inclusion of pupils with ASD in the educational process both here and abroad and introduces the Pennsylvania support class model as one of the possibilities of implementing education with the assistance of an ABA based approach. TITLE: Developing Communication Skills in Children with Autism Using Verbal Behavior - Applied Behavior Analysis AUTHOR: Bc. PaedDr. Jiřina Klenková, Ph.D. ABSTRACT: This thesis deals with the development of communication skills in children with autism using Verbal Behavior - Applied Behavioral Analysis (VB-ABA). The aim of this work is to introduce VB-ABA approach as an effective intervention for people with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). It is a monographic work with emphasis on a theory. The empirical part consist evaluative single-case study. The thesis is devided into six theoretical and one empirical chapter. The first theoretical chapter presents the issue of communication in a view of behaviorism and compares this approach with classical linguistics. The second chapter describes theories of language acquisition and language development from behavioral and linguistic perspective. The third chapter discusses the development of children's speech in the context of ontogeny and its functions. The fourth chapter deals with the issue of communication skills in the context of ASD. It also attempts to provide a more comprehensive view of the ABA intervention, which provides individuals with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) an additional option in their educational process. Problem behavior of children with autism spectrum disorder - solution by method of applied behavioral analysis

The dissertation is covering Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) and its particular factors for elimination of problem behavior in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The provided text is divided into five parts; firstly, the focus is upon definition of ASD, the classification and autism triad of impairments. Secondly, a list of interventions provided for ASD children in Czech Republic or in the world is provided, followed by abbreviated descriptions. Afterward, the development of ABA and its basic methods are described to some extent. The most important names connected to ABA are mentioned as well as a record of the main concepts of the therapy. This should clear the understanding of what ABA is and how it is conducted. The following part focuses at ASD childrens' problem behavior. The functions of behavior, Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence (A-B- C) analysis and strategies helping to reject problem behavior are thoroughly described and discussed upon. The last but not least, the fifth part is dedicated to a case study. The case study focuses on a girl with ASD going through intensive ABA therapy daily. Characteristics of the girl, her development, professional evaluations and tables with graphs from the therapy are provided by the attending ABA facility.

The role of motivation in teaching mands

This diploma thesis deals with the developement of communication skills in children with autistic spectrum disorder. The aim of this work is to explain the development of these skills by Verbal Behavior of Applied Behavioral Analysis (VB ABA), specifically in the field of children's request (manding). The thesis contains a theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part is focused on the description of the basic principles of the Applied Behavioral Analysis as well as the approach Applied Behavioral Analysis - Verbal Behavior which is based on this science. In more detail, the thesis explains the manding technique and the principles of motivation, whose understanding is essential for this technique and for all VB ABA intervention. Author's research follows the progress in the manding of two children with autistic spectrum disorder during the eight-month VB ABA intervention. Also the thesis analyzes the factors that could have influenced the teaching of mands, in particular the role the child's motivation in the effective development of manding skills. A certain section of the practical part of the thesis is extracted into the annexes as a non- public part of the work in order to preserve children's anonymity.
